Julian Hammond

I work part time as a bar manager at the Hibernia in Angle, and in my spare time I enjoy walking the coast path and playing golf when the weather permits!

How many lives have you saved?
Difficult to say, but I have been involved in over 500 shouts in over 21 years

How do people react when you tell them you are a volunteer RNLI crew member?
They normally say “oh you hero!!” but it’s not true it is just a hobby

How do you keep fit?
Natural athlete !

Do you ever get hungry when you are out on a shout?
Yes, I always raid the chocolate supplies

How long does it take to get the boat in the water?
About 15 mins from the time the pager goes off

Have you ever saved a boy or girl from the sea? How old were they?
A boy of 7 and a girl of 9 on an inflatable bed

What is it like on the lifeboat when the weather is really bad?
Hot, smelly and bumpy!

Do you ever get sea sick?
Only once in 21 years

What does your family think about your lifeboat work?
My wife worries on bad shouts, my son is also a crew member

What happens if you’re asleep in bed and you are called out?
I try to get up and dressed quietly and not wake all the house up

Describe a rescue you have been involved in
A November night in 2004, lifeboat launched to a stricken Jersey based Trawler in a force 9/10 gale (very very rough & windy). We stood by the vessel for 8 hours until a tug boat arrived to tow the trawler back to Milford Haven. It was a 12 hour shout in all described by the coxswain as the worst shout the “Lady Rank” (Angle Lifeboat) had seen!!
