How many lives have you saved?
As a crew member I believe I’ve helped rescue over 100 people

What is it like being a crew member?
FANTASTIC – I experience a real sense of pride being part of a team doing an extraordinary job

How dangerous is your job as a crew member?
It is dangerous – as I am one of the navigators it is my responsibility to get the boat home safely & we are very well trained

Is it exciting?
100% yes it’s a buzz

Have you ever saved a boy or girl from the sea? If so, how old were they?
Not out of the water. But I have helped families with young children whose boats have broken down.

What happens if you’re asleep in bed and you are called out?
I’m not asleep for long!!!! I jump out of bed pull on some clothes & head out of the door

Have you ever been up in a helicopter? If so, was it good?
Yes – again it was exciting. On a training exercise I got to be a casualty & was winched off the Lifeboat into the helicopter

What’s the training like? Is there a lot of reading and writing?
First class, there is a lot of reading & writing, as well as practical exercises. The trainers help as much as possible

What made you want to join the Lifeboat crew?
Family Tradition – As long as there has been a lifeboat in Angle a “Watkins” has been on the crew.

How do you feel when you get called out in the middle of a cold winter’s night?
COLD – but the adrenaline kicks in and I don’t think about the weather

How long does it take you to get the lifeboat in the water?
After the pager bleeps it normally takes about 15 mins to get the crew sorted and launch.

What is it like being a crew member?
FANTASTIC – I experience a real sense of pride being part of a team doing an extraordinary job
